The past few months have looked very different for everyone in comparison to what they usually would look like. With so much still unknown about how our futures will play out, the best thing that we can do right now is try to control our present situations as best we can and try to put ourselves in the best possible position. I’ve come up with a few easy ways to help with our finances in the present day. I’ve been implementing all of these techniques and I hope that you’ll find that they help you too.
- The first thing that you should do is adjust your Car Insurance policy. If you’re working from home or currently out of work, update your Insurance policy to reflect your new circumstances. Some companies allow you to do this online, and some just require a quick phone call. As soon as I started working from home full-time (before the pandemic), I called my insurance company to update them on my new zero kilometer commute, and they were able to update my policy in just a few clicks which saved me money starting as soon as my next insurance payment. The savings will vary for each person, but it’s well worth spending a few minutes doing!
- Almost everyone is currently buying less and spending less than they used to. Instead of letting that money dwindle away or keeping it in an easily accessible bank account for easy spending – calculate exactly how much you are currently saving instead of spending and transfer it right over to your savings account. This is the easiest way to start a consistent savings habit, and you won’t even notice the extra money taken
- Take this time to go over your current finances and look over where all of your money goes each month. Figure out what expenses you can cut down on, and implement those changes going forward. Make a list of expenses you can slash right now, and a list of changes to implement in the near future
- Now is the perfect time to declutter your home. Go through each room, and instead of discarding or donating each item – evaluate if there would be any resale value to it online. You can sell your items by doing a no-contact porch pickup by listing it on a local marketplace, or you can list it for sale online using websites such as eBay, Poshmark, Mercari etc.
