Reselling products online is one of my absolute favourite ways to make money online while working from home. It allows you to work for yourself, and the financial opportunity is only limited by how much effort and resources you put in to your business. I started several years ago, and I’ve seen huge growth each year that I’ve sold online, and most of my growth came last year when I started putting real time towards my steadily growing business.
Whether you’re selling on eBay, Poshmark, Amazon, Mercari, or somewhere else, I wanted to help start you off on the right foot with your online business venture and create a master list with all of the supplies that you’ll need to start your reselling business with, and some more that will help you down the road once you start increasing your online selling and your sales start to grow. The goal isn’t to spend a fortune to get your business up and running, I always like to invest in just the basics at first and then buy more as I start to bring in some money. If you have these products laying around at home than that’s perfect! If not, here are the products that I use and recommend to help you get started reselling online:
Prepping products
- Lint rollers – I like to send the clothing that I sell in the cleanest condition possible. These lint rollers pick up little fluffs easily
- Fabric shaver – this is one of my favourite tools and I can’t believe that I used to live without one. It shaves off any pilling and extra fluffs that hang around on material
- Tide To Go – these pens work miracles for any small marks or stains that you want to remove
- Handheld steamer – this is a wonderful little steamer that helps to get wrinkles out of your clothing and it doesn’t take up too much space
- Sewing kit – I always have one of these handy just in case there’s a small rip or tear that needs fixing
- Sewing machine – I’m just starting out with sewing machines, so I bought this one to get myself comfortable with using one, but if you’re looking for something more heavy duty this is a great option
- Scotty Peeler & Goo Gone – these little tools remove stuck on tags/stickers and gunk incredibly easily, they’re well worth every penny!
Creating listings
- Camera – I’ve always used my phone camera to take all of my product photos. There’s no need to overdo it, as long as your pictures are bright enough (see my lighting kit suggestion below) and clear enough, your phone camera is all you’ll need!
- Lighting kit – these are the lights that I use when I take photographs. I started out without them, but they made photographing a million times easier because they allow me to take pictures in the evening, on cloudy days, and even sunny days when the sun is too far from my window. Seriously a game changer for me
- Measuring tape – I include quick width and length measurements for every piece of clothing that I list. These soft measuring tapes make it super easy to measure and then throw it over my shoulder until I’m ready for my next listing
- Backdrop – I started out taking photos of clothing against a blank wall, and then I experimented with different prettier backdrops. A few that I like are this one, this one, and this one. A great thing about the backdrops is that they can be used for larger hard good items too
- Hangers & hooks – I always use these hooks to stick on my wall, and these hangers for hanging clothes on in the photos (and storing inventory if you choose to store your clothing that way)
- Mannequin – great for if you want to have your clothing modeled on a mannequin dress form instead of hanging
Shipping
- Printer – for printing your shipping labels right from home
- Printer paper
- DYMO 4XL Thermal Printer – if you want a printer that gives you labels that you can just stick onto your packages and ship out, the DYMO 4XL will do everything that you need
- DYMO 4XL refill labels – these are the 4×6″ refill labels that fit the DYMO 4XL
- Poly mailers – I use poly mailers to ship all of the clothing that I sell. I like to use 6″ x 9″ for smaller packages, 10″ x 13″ for medium sized packages, and 14.5″ x 19″ for larger packages
- Shipping scale – this helps you figure out your postage so you can print your labels from home
- Measuring tape – I also use my soft measuring tape when measuring my shipping packages
- Boxes – these are great for shipping larger orders and hard goods. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you’re located in America, you can get select boxes free from USPS
- Packaging tape – this tape gun pack will get you started and these refill rolls will keep you going for a great price
- Bubble wrap – making sure that your shipments are secure and that your products arrive in one piece is so important, I rely on bubble wrap to secure my hard items
Inventory storage
- Shelving unit – these are the exact shelving units that I’ve been using for years. They’re durable and spacious
- Storage containers – perfect for keeping your inventory organized and tidy
- Hanging rack – for vertical storage
- Hangers – I use these hangers for photographing and they double perfectly for storing inventory too if you choose to store your clothing items hung – they’re nonslip which makes life much simpler when you’re flipping through and looking for a specific piece
Getting started on the right track will help you start and grow your reselling journey even quicker. Being prepared right from the start will help you avoid a frantic scramble for supplies after you’ve started to sell your products. So now that you’re ready to start your selling journey, good luck and happy selling!
